Julianne Moore insists gay marriage is “a
very basic human right”.
The Hollywood actress joined a host of A-list stars to
campaign to legalise same-sex unions across America on Monday night.
Robert De Niro and Courtney Love were among the guests at
Calvin Klein creative directors Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli’s launch of
the Americans for Marriage Equality campaign at their Madison Avenue flagship
store.
Julianne strongly believes gay unions should be fully
accepted in society.
“I think it’s a very basic human rights issue,” Julianne
told WWD.
“Everybody has the right to marry the person they love and
be represented as a couple and family.
“It’s something that people will look back on in years to
come and say, ‘I can’t believe it took so long for us to recognise this.’ It’ll
be like segregation and giving women the right to vote.”
The Human Rights Campaign’s Brian Ellner thanked Julianne
for being the first big name star to sign on to the group’s video campaign.
Her participation paved the way for other celebrities to
help with the initiative.
Anna Wintour, who also attended the launch, filmed her own
part for the video earlier this year.
“Obviously, I’ve been a great believer of marriage equality
from the start,” she announced.
Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka have been
engaged for five years and have adopted twins together. However, the actor says
they are yet to set a wedding date.
“It’ll be nice to get a callous on the other hand,” Neil
quipped of the potential for adding a wedding ring to his finger.
